Kamigoto 2: Aosagaura Church

Church on UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List

By Takako Sakamoto    - 2 min read

Aosagaura Church is one of 29 churches on Kamigoto Islands. It was originally built in 1878, and was renovated into a brick church by a Japanese architect in 1910. This is the first authentic brick church designed and built by a Japanese architect with a layered roof,  well-balanced structure and refined design. It's one of the Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki, which are now on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. It was also designated an important national asset in 2001.

I was born in and grew up in Tokushima prefecture, and have lived in many places since then: Nishinomiya, Kyoto, Nara, Mie, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Fukuoka and Fukui. I am currently living in Yokohama City. All the places I lived, all the places I visited, I have loved dearly. The historical places where people lived, loved, suffered, and fought - places where I can still hear their heartbeats - mesmerize me. I'd like to retrace the footsteps of the people who lived in Japan a long long time ago, and introduce to you what they left behind on this soil.
