Amanohashidate in Video

One of the three most scenic views of Japan

Amanohashidate is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, the other two being Miyajima and Matsushima. Beaches, forested mountains and a sand spit combine to create a magical sight. Located in northern Kyoto prefecture, it is a comfortable and scenic 120 minute ride from Kyoto station or 60 minutes from Maizuru's Cruise Ship Terminal. If you look at it upside down between your legs, you can visualize the sand spit being the bridge to heaven.

There are viewing spots from Amanohashidate and Ichinomiya, the two towns on either side of the sand spit. You can also walk or rent a bicycle and make your way between the two along a gentle avenue lined with over two thousand pine trees. In mid- August this is a great spot to view the Miyazu summer fireworks.

Orrin, this is what I want to do on vacation! Beautiful and calm cruising on the bay, feeding seagulls, the gentle sound of soft waves on the sandy beach, and being on top of the world from the chairlift! Thank you for bringing back my memories of Amanohashidate!

Perhaps you can indulge in a "circumnavigate the island of Honshu" trip. From Sendai you can get a ferry to Nagoya, or from Niigata you can ship it down to Tsuruga, which is close to Amanohashidate. Did you know Honshu is the 7th largest island in the world, even bigger than Britain? I am going to get you to Amanohashidate one day!!

Thank you for your support!
